A TIME OF RE-THINKING

 

We all like the status quo, we all get complacent; we all like to just settle back into the same old solutions without having to make any serious changes. The world, in which we live, has programmed us with its set of solutions for getting through life, and we often accept the common fare without analyzing it ourselves, and thinking it through.

 

We accept the world’s criteria for establishing our worth in our society, and strive to achieve the goals it sets for us, in hopes that we will be considered successful. Our society has programmed us to get a job and immediately head out and charge a new car or two, sign up for a 30 year mortgage, and furnish the house with the credit card. All this on top of a student loan that amounts to more than our grandparents saved in a lifetime of hard work.

 

I love baseball, and played a lot of baseball when I was younger. Many times I have watched my team in the playoffs or World Series, and they just stopped playing heads up ball – they started to ignore the basics. They forgot the fundamentals that got them to the winners circle. Today it’s time to re-think our basic financial strategy and get back to the basics.

 

Let’s start working our way through college and not charging it. When we graduate let’s buy a car that is 5 years old with 40k miles on it and not that brand new car. And let’s buy a house that we can easily afford, and avoid renting. Now, let’s not contribute to our 401k at work until our house is paid for. The very best investment anyone could have made in the last 10 years, actually the last 100 years, would have been to have paid off their home. Not only would you have not been foreclosed, but you would sleep easy and enjoyed peace of mind.

Back in the 1990’s, Japan lived through an economic downturn, similar to the downturn the US is dealing with now. The Japanese experienced an explosion of speculative investment in the 1980’s, inspiring bankers to write risky loans based on over heated, inflated prices. Both the stock and the Real Estate markets were speculated beyond reason, fueled by the irresponsible monetary policy of the Japanese Government. Sound familiar?

 

When the proverbial bubble burst, the Government tried to pull the Japanese economy out of a tail spin by, you guessed it, printing fast sums of money. The evidence is over whelming and conclusive – it did not work.

 

Like America today the banks won’t loan out money, not because they wanted to hoard it, but because there were no profitable loans to write, no loans that would return the principal and pay the interest – no matter how low. Because the economy was bleeding badly, the Japanese industries lost their technological advantage, their international sales plummeted, as business declined their domestic markets dropped, causing a serious deflationary adjustment that just added to the problem. Flooding the market with more easy money, which the government was printing, only added to the problem, and as the government subsidizing failing banks and failing business the economy cascaded into a sea of stagnation. Their salvation came when new thinking returned the private sector back to sound economic policies – the tried and true basic Capitalists Fundamentals that always work. The easy money was eventually loan out to foreign investors, who could return a reasonable return on investment without massive, incompetent government intervention into the private sector.

 

It’s time to return to the fundamentals.
