The new codes call for more insulation in the walls. In cooler climates, zones 5 and 6, the walls must be insulated to R-20. Additionally, the basement walls must be insulated to an R-13 or better even if you must frame a stud wall to create the necessary cavity for the additional insulation.
There was also a significant change in the IECC and the IRC regarding cathedral ceilings. Cathedral ceilings are known energy losers. Cathedral ceilings do not allow enough space to allow for thick insulation. The IECC now limits the cathedral ceilings to 20% or less of the insulated ceiling area. Hugh massive cathedral ceilings could become a thing of the past as our energy conscience society moves to protect the energy we have.
