You hear it on TV by the talking heads and see it on magazine covers that the Recession is over, but is that true?. Layoffs have slowed since many businesses have cut as many jobs as they can, and the stock market is rising also signaling a possible recovery around the bend.  Many economists are changing their theory and now saying things seem to be getting better or leveling off with the economy beginning to grow again in the third quarter, but that unemployment will continue to rise as a lagging indicator.

 

The retail sector showed some signs of strength in June in such categories as electronics, appliances and sporting stores, however, merchandise chain stores and large retailers like Walmart actually fell while clothing stores were unchanged.

 

Wholesale prices rose fueled by higher gas prices at the pump as well as higher food prices at the grocery stores

 

Some homebuilders have started building again.  Housing starts and permits have risen for a second month possibly showing some signs of a recovery.   The Commerce Department reported last Friday, July 31, 2009 that the housing market is starting to stabilize with housing starts rising to 3.6%.  Of course this is great news for those of us who want to purchase a new home. 

 

It does seem as you weed through the numbers and figures, that there may be a chance of a slight recovery in the second half of the year.  Some reports do give a glimmer of hope.

Stock or fund share prices are more important than profits and dividends, so little effort is spent growing the business and the company is consumed with manipulating the stock market prices of their shares.

 

Hence, Bernie Madoff can run a ponzi scheme for 30 years and nobody notices. In fact, he is one of the darlings of the financial news shows, and all the pundits are enamored with his personae and apparent success. None of these “analysts” ever did their homework and checked the books. Human beings are deceitful and selfish by nature and when left to themselves, will find every reason under heaven why it’s OK to help themselves to your money. The more I investigate investing in Wall Street, the more I am convinced that few, if any, will retire on the money they have invested with the Wall Street crowd. I just checked out the 30 year results of the Janus Fund, one of the most popular funds here in Colorado. Over the last 30 years they have cumulatively lost about 4% totally and the fund management fees are .88% per year.
