With the elections just a few days away most people are hoping for a break in the Colorado economy. If Amendments 60, 61, 62, 63, and proposition 101 pass there is hope for a new dawn in this state. But if the amendments go down then it’s time to go to plan B as jobs will continue to hemorrhage, Real Estate will stay depressed, and incomes will still slide. To pretend that Jobs will be lost if these ballot issues pass just demonstrates how far the voters are from the reality of their situation.
Spending on the local level is as out of control as it is on the state and federal level. County salaries enormous when compared to private salaries, and a bureaucratic regulatory rampage has devastated businesses and squeezed profits to all time lows. The estimates show that these measures would lower the oppressive tax burden by about $2,000.00 per house hold per year. Yes county spend would need to be rolled back to 2005 levels but many families could save their homes from foreclosure.
If you invested the 2k in a Roth IRA in ten years you would have enough to send you child or grandchild to college: loan free; You could make all the payments on a modest car financed over 5 years; you could spend 2k a year painting, repairing, or improving your home; you could rent a condo and go skiing for a week on the western slope; the family could join a health club and start to work out; you could buy a camper and start to visit Yellowstone, Disney World, or Alaska if you have the time all on a campers budget. All these adventures would create jobs, stimulate investment, contribute to the kids childhood experiences, and bring your family closer during these hard times; rather than moping around the house while Mom and Dad worry about tomorrow.
I have never sat at the dinning room table on a holiday with my family and looked at tax receipts. But with fond memories, and with faces all aglow we have relived our camping trips, our weeks in snowy Steamboat, winter horseback riding, swimming in the Atlantic for a week in North Carolina, enjoying Disney Land with the kids, and going to all the college graduations full of pride and satisfied that all the bills were paid and the kids had a chance at life.
Life should not be about spending more than half of your life’s labor working to pay taxes for thoughtless political schemes that have destroyed our schools, amassed hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt for our children down to the 5th generation, and have shattered the moral compass of our young folks. I know very few people who still send their children to the government schools. All my children are home schooling the grandkids or sending them to private schools. All the grandkids are excelling. I hope your will take your $2,000 and invest in you kids and grandkids lives, not exorbitant salaries for the county commissioners. It’s your money; it’s your life.
