BLACK FRIDAY A RELATIVE SUCCESS

The term Black Friday originated in Philadelphia when the heavy traffic on the day after Thanksgiving was attributed to all the Christmas shoppers getting a jump on their holiday shopping. Why it is called Black Friday I don’t know? White Friday would be better for those dreaming of a White Christmas. Perhaps Green Friday or Red Friday to reflect all the festive gift-wrappings, the joyous ribbons and colorful Christmas lights all celebrating the sacred birth of Jesus on Christmas mourning.

The reports coming from the retailers are that the average consumer will spend $683.00 down from$705.00 last year and that the receipts from Friday seem to be holding up. Apparently the stores have lowered their hiring numbers and kept inventories down to reflect the reduced spending.

My prayer is that families who really do not have the money to spend don’t spend. We all want our children to experience our love in the form of presents on Christmas mourning. But love is not a present and perhaps it is a good time for our children and grand children to learn that love is far more than a new toy.

Let’s let this Christmas be a glorious refrain of “Glory to God in the Highest” and not just another day of too many toys and too many bills.
